The Furbara military airfield is located in the central Italian region of Latium , around 40 kilometers northwest of Rome and around eight kilometers west of Cerveteri near the village of Furbara. It is currently the location of the 17º Stormo Incursori , a special unit of the Italian Air Force .
Infrastructure
The small airfield located directly on the Mediterranean coast has a grass runway and a helipad . Immediately west of the airfield is a training area for the special unit. A small boat harbor also belongs to the facility.
history
The airfield was laid out in 1913 and was initially used to operate airships . During the First World War , a fighter pilot school was set up on the airfield . In 1920 an aerobatic team was established in Furbara , led by Captain Mario Ugo Gordesco; the airfield is named after him. In October 1927 the fighter pilot school in Furbara was re-established, but it soon moved to Castiglione del Lago . In the following years, Furbara served mainly as a testing ground. During the Second World War it was the location of several Italian hunting teams. In October 1943 , parts of the II. And III. Were lying here with their Focke-Wulf Fw 190 . Rapid combat squadron group 10 . In March and November 1943 and in February 1944 it was attacked by Allied aircraft and almost completely destroyed. Only one tower at the airport entrance has survived from that time.
After the war, the airfield was again used for testing purposes. Among other things, rockets were tested there , also in cooperation with the BPD company and some German scientists, including Hermann Oberth . After the opening of Rome-Fiumicino Airport , the airfield was downgraded to a subordinate base for air safety reasons and the test site was relocated to Salto di Quirra in Sardinia . In 1978 a training center was established in Furbara to provide survival training for pilots and other flight personnel. In this center, the Italian Air Force developed Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) skills over time . On March 1, 2003, the Reparto Incursori Aeronautica Militare (RIAM) special unit was set up in Furbara and renamed 17º Stormo Incursori on April 2, 2008 .
Others
Another airfield was located on the territory of the municipality of Cerveteri until the Second World War ( ⊙ ). It was the location of an aerial reconnaissance school and, in the summer of 1943, several fighter squadrons. Today there is a branch of the Italian foreign intelligence service .
