history

The company's history goes back to the chemical company BPD, founded in Segni Scalo near Colleferro in 1912 by the engineer Leopoldo Parodi Delfino with the support of Senator Giovanni Bombrini . At first it mainly produced explosives and ammunition , later also chemicals for agricultural and industrial purposes. The expansion of the company made a significant contribution to the development of Colleferro and its elevation to an independent municipality in 1935.

After experimenting with rocket engines on a test site in Colleferro in 1927 , the company specialized in this area after the Second World War . From 1966, BPD received development contracts from the European Launcher Development Organization and later from the successor organization ESA .

BPD was taken over in 1968 by the viscose fiber manufacturer SNIA Viscosa and renamed SNIA-BPD. In 1994 the engine manufacturer Fiat Avio bought the company. In 2003, Fiat Avio became Avio SpA , owned by Finmeccanica (now Leonardo) and the American investment group Carlyle Group . In 2006, the Carlyle stake went into the possession of the private equity fund Cinven for 2.57 billion euros . The company's engine and turbine division was sold to General Electric in August 2013 for € 3.3 billion and renamed Avio Aero . The Avio company emerged from the rocket engine division in Colleferro, and it stands in the tradition of BPD. While Avio Aero continues to refer to Fiat Avio and its predecessor Fiat Aviazione , Avio is an abbreviation for Advanced Vision Into Orbit .

At the beginning of 2017, Cinven sold its 81 percent stake. Avio shares have been traded on the stock exchange since April 10, 2017. Leonardo doubled its shares in the company from 14 to 28 percent in the course of the IPO ; in 2020 the share rose to 29.63 percent.

Avio's activities today focus on the Ariane 5 , Ariane 6 , Vega and Aster rockets . For this reason, it is also represented in the Kourou Space Center .
