The NCO School of the Army in Viterbo ( it. Scuola Sottufficiali dell'Esercito ) is a training facility for non-commissioned officers of the Italian Army . In Viterbo there is also a comparable facility of the Italian Air Force .

history

A first NCO School of the Army was in Italy on 1 July 1888 in Caserta opened. By 1895 it had trained almost 1,300 NCOs of all branches of service (military branches), but was soon no longer able to meet the increasing demand. In the further course, the individual branches of service or services trained their NCOs at troop schools or their own NCO schools.

In 1948 a general non-commissioned officer school was established in Spoleto , and in 1951 a non-commissioned officer school for specialists in Rieti . These two schools were replaced in 1965 by the central non-commissioned officer school in Viterbo, which still exists today, following the tradition of the original school founded in Caserta in 1888.

From 1965 to 1982 the course for non-commissioned officers lasted eight months, and then until 1995 twelve months. This course was followed by several months of specialist training at the respective military schools and, finally, transfer to the departments. After a total of around four years of service, he was either taken on as a professional soldier or returned to civilian life. The specialist training of NCOs was recognized as professional training ( qualifica professionale ).

reform

In 1995 a decision was made to reform the career of NCOs. The higher NCOs (with Portepee , Maresciallo ) have since formed their own, upscale career, in which applicants with university entrance qualifications can enter directly from civilian life. The other non-commissioned officers (without porterage) form the career goal of the teams , whereby promotion to the higher non-commissioned officer career is possible under certain conditions. Teams that apply for this upscale career must also prove that they have a university entrance qualification, while more experienced NCOs without portfolios need above-average performance to apply, but no university entrance qualification. In all cases there is a selection process before the training.

education

In addition to military training, candidates for the senior non-commissioned officer career usually complete a three-year university course . The military training goal is basically the ability to command a platoon in the respective branch of arms ( comandante di plotone ), a smaller part is trained as specialists, in particular as paramedics or as pilots of the army aviation . The first year of training takes place in Viterbo, the second year also at the military schools of the individual branches of the armed forces. At the end of the second year, the promotion to Maresciallo (OR-8, sergeant major ) usually takes place . In the third and final year, the military specialist training is completed and the university studies are also completed with the bachelor's degree . As a rule, the "Economics and Organizational Sciences" course is to be completed in cooperation with the University of Tuscia , while the Paramedics course is a medical degree . For internal promoters with many years of military experience, there are also training programs shortened to one or two years without a university degree. In addition, the non-commissioned officer school offers various advanced or advanced training courses, among other things as preparation for use by staffs or international command posts or in supporting areas.

For teams who want to become non-commissioned officers ( sergents ), the 80th Infantry (Training) Regiment Roma in Cassino takes over the training. This regiment (in battalion strength ) is subordinate to the NCO School in Viterbo. The corresponding course lasts only six months, since these candidate NCOs are professional soldiers who, in addition to several years of military experience, usually also have specialist knowledge from courses at military schools.

Other branches of the armed forces

The Italian Air Force maintains a NCO school ( Scuola Marescialli ) at the Viterbo military airfield , which trains senior NCOs in a very similar way, also in cooperation with the University of Viterbo. The training of the other NCOs coming from the teams takes place at a technical school in Caserta, which is located on the grounds of the Royal Castle .

The Navy also follows this training scheme. It runs NCO schools in Taranto and La Maddalena . In addition to the University of Viterbo, it also cooperates with the University of Bari .

The Carabinieri train their NCOs in Florence and Velletri according to the above scheme .
