The airfield Toblach lies on the Dobbiaco field at Toblach in South Tyrol , Italy . It is a small military airfield that can also be used to a limited extent by general aviation .
Infrastructure and use
The airfield is located in the Puster Valley , immediately south of Toblach and the state road 49 that passes here . It has a 700 meter long and 50 meter wide grass runway (10/28) running in a west-east direction . To the west are smaller military facilities with hangars and a heliport . The airfield is subordinate to the Italian Air Force , which has maintained an airfield command ( Distaccamento aeroportuale “Mario Pezzi” ) and a training and recreation facility ( Villa Irma ) here since 1966 . The airfield is mainly used as a forward base for an army aviation unit from Bolzano equipped with helicopters .
Since 2006, the airfield can be used from May to October on weekends and public holidays or by arrangement by the general aviation licensed here. The local aero club is responsible for civil flight operations at the field. In winter, the airfield is also used for cross-country skiing competitions.
history
The airfield was set up by the Austro-Hungarian aviation troops and during the First World War it was temporarily used by an aviation division of the Bavarian Army . After the Second World War , the pilot and entrepreneur Furio Lauri tried to revive the airfield. During the Cold War , the focus was again on military use. In 1956 and 1957, two small army aviation units were built in Toblach , but they were taken over in 1976 by the 4th Altair Army Aviation Regiment in Bozen. Since that time the Dobbiaco airport has only served as an advanced base. In 2005, the newly established local aviation club applied for civilian use of the airfield, which was also approved by the military and the aviation authority ENAC .
