The Latina military airfield is located in the Italian region of Lazio , around 60 kilometers south-east of Rome and just under ten kilometers north of the provincial capital Latina . It is located between the Via Appia and the Roma-Formia-Napoli railway near Latina Scalo. The Italian Air Force trains pilots here . The airfield is also open to a limited extent for general aviation .

history

The military airfield opened on March 28, 1939, replacing the abandoned airfields of Cisterna , Sezze and Terracina . In May 1939 the blind flight school ( Scuola di volo senza visibilità ) moved from Rome-Ciampino to the new airfield, where it remained active until April 1943. Subsequently, various combat units replaced one another here. On September 16, 1943, 84 British Vickers Wellington bombed the airfield and largely destroyed it. After the Allies landed at Anzio and Nettuno , the airfield was occupied in early 1944 and abandoned for the time being at the end of the war.

Reconstruction began in 1949. An airfield command was set up in June 1950, and a year later an anti-aircraft school was temporarily set up in Latina ; from 1952 to 1954, an air transport squadron was stationed here. In 1955 the Transport Aviation School moved with its C-45 and C-47 from Frosinone to Latina. Since 1974 the flight school in Latina has been providing basic flying training for prospective military pilots. Since 1985 the school has been called 70th Squadron ( 70º Stormo ). The originally used SIAI Marchetti SF-260AM were replaced a few years ago by the more modern SF-260EA. In addition, some Piaggio P.166 , Aermacchi MB-339 and Tecnam P2006T were received .

education

Candidates for pilots from all Italian armed forces are tested for their suitability in Latina ( screening ) and complete a beginner's training ( initial flight training ) until they acquire their first military pilot license. This training is usually also completed by prospective pilots of the Italian police forces and other authorities, provided they are to pilot fixed-wing aircraft . Candidate pilots in the Italian Air Force are also examined to see whether they are suitable for further training as jet pilots. If this is the case, they then complete appropriate courses, either at the Lecce-Galatina military airfield in southern Italy or at Sheppard Air Force Base and other facilities in the USA . Budding transport pilots come to Pratica di Mare and Pisa , helicopter pilots to Frosinone.
