history

The Mare Isabella airfield was the first airfield in the city of Bari from 1909 to 1914. One of the first aero clubs in Italy was founded here. After the outbreak of the First World War, it was decided to move to the current location in Palese-Macchie, which was strategically a little more favorable. The new airfield was modernized in the late 1920s and reopened on October 12, 1930 as the Umberto di Savoia military airfield . In 1934, a terminal building for civil line services was inaugurated. From 1944 to 1946, the airfield was used by Allied air forces and then returned to the Italian Air Force . This opened it again to civil traffic in 1960. Alitalia and its subsidiary ATI set up a number of domestic connections, especially to Rome . The length of the previous runway (12/30) was soon no longer sufficient for the new jet aircraft, which is why it was decided in the 1970s to build runway 07/25, which is still in use today. In 1981 a new terminal was put into service, which was modernized and expanded for the 1990 soccer World Cup . The airport was due to have a rail connection as early as the World Cup, a project whose implementation was long delayed. After further renovations in 2000, the terminal was rebuilt from 2002 to 2005, a new control tower was erected , the apron , taxiways and runway were expanded. The military section in the east with the old 1680 meter long runway 12/30 was separated from the rest of the airport. In the long term, the military part, on which various command posts of the Italian air force and a refugee camp are still located, is to be used for civilian purposes. Further renovations and extensions of the airport are planned. In February 2015, work on a terminal expansion was completed, in March 2018 the runway 07/25 was renovated and extended to 3000 meters.

In terms of aviation history, Puglia was Italy's stepping stone to the Orient . For this reason there is still a high concentration of civil and military airfields in this region. The operating company Aeroporti di Puglia operates the airport of Bari as well as the commercial airport of Brindisi-Casale and the airports of Taranto and Foggia . The airport of Bari, together with the airport of Brindisi-Casale, is the most important in the Apulia region, whereas Taranto and Foggia are only of regional importance. There are also military airfields in Amendola near Foggia, Gioia del Colle and Lecce . Taranto-Grottaglie is also a naval aviation base and Brindisi also has a military part. The small civil airport Lecce-San Cataldo is located near Lecce .

Other important local airlines are Eurowings and Germanwings , Volotea , Air Europa , Alitalia , Lufthansa CityLine and Air Dolomiti as well as easyJet , British Airways and Iberia (as of January 2018).
