Igor Alexejewitsch Malkow

Igor Alexejewitsch Malkow ( Russian Игорь Алексеевич Малков ; born February 9, 1965 in Pervouralsk , Russia) is a former Soviet speed skater .

At the Olympic Games in Sarajevo in 1984 , at the age of 19 years and 9 days, he became the youngest ever Olympic champion in speed skating. He won with 0.05 seconds ahead of Tomas Gustafson . Before that, he failed over 5000 meters with Tomas Gustafson in 0.02 seconds.

In the same winter, he shocked the competition when he undercut the world record over 10,000 meters with 13:54:81 by almost 30 seconds on the high-altitude speed skating rink in Medeo . However, this world record was not recognized by the international speed skating federation.

He then ran an official world record on March 24, 1984 in Alma-Ata with 14: 21.51 minutes. This world record was only improved two years later by Geir Karlstad .

In the following years Malkow did not do so well and ended his career after the 1987/1988 season. In 1990 he ran again at the Soviet all-round championships.
