National Breastfeeding Commission

The National Breastfeeding Commission (NSK) has been part of the Max Rubner Institute , Federal Research Institute for Nutrition and Food, since April 1, 2019 . The NSK is a body that aims to promote the breastfeeding of infants in Germany .

With the founding of the National Breastfeeding Commission, the Federal Government signed up to the so-called Innocenti Declaration "for the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding" and thus fulfilled a demand of the 45th World Health Assembly in 1992.

The National Breastfeeding Commission was based at the Federal Institute for Consumer Health Protection and Veterinary Medicine from 1999 to October 31, 2002 and has belonged to the BfR in Berlin since its dissolution and was relocated to the Max Rubner Institute on April 1, 2019.

Scientists, paediatricians , representatives of breastfeeding associations, midwives and obstetricians and pediatric nurses work together in the commission. Its task is to promote breastfeeding in the Federal Republic of Germany. It advises the federal government , issues guidelines and recommendations and supports various initiatives to remove existing obstacles to breastfeeding. The Breastfeeding Commission draws up statements on topics that are relevant to breastfeeding in Germany.
