The airport Lecce-San Cataldo (also Lecce-Lepore ; it. Aeroporto “Lepore” di Lecce-San Cataldo ) is located in the south-eastern Italian region of Apulia , around ten kilometers east of the city center of Lecce , near the Adriatic seaside resort of San Cataldo. The name Lecce-San Cataldo is used to distinguish it from some other airports in the area.
Infrastructure and use
The airfield, located in the area of the municipality of Vernole , has an asphalt runway (18/36) that runs in north-south direction, is around 900 meters long and 45 meters wide . To the east of it run taxiways to the apron in the north-east with the associated handling facilities . The airfield is used primarily by the local Luftsportverein and the General Aviation . Efforts are being made to start commercial air traffic on niche routes on the Adriatic. Brindisi International Airport is just 40 kilometers to the north-west .
history
The airfield was built in 1970 by the Aeroclub Lecce. Over the years, operations had to be shut down several times, among other things because of legal problems. In 2002 the company Fly Mediterraneo Srl took over the airfield.
Others
From 1943 to 1945 the Allies used numerous airfields in Apulia for military purposes, including the Lecce Airfield , which should not be confused with the current Lecce-Galatina military airfield or with the civil airfield Lecce-San Cataldo. The Lecce Airfield was like today's airfield San Cataldo on the provincial road 298, but only about 5 kilometers east of the center of Lecce at 40 ° 21 '22 " N , 18 ° 13' 58" O . The current name of the Lecce Airfield is Aviosuperficie Fondone Lecce (Rwy 15/33, 720 × 20 m).
