The SS 125 Orientale Sarda is one of the most important and longest state roads in Sardinia . It leads from the regional capital Cagliari in the south along the east coast via Muravera , Tortolì ( airport ), Baunei , Dorgali and Orosei to Olbia ( airport ) and on to Palau on the Costa Smeralda in the northeast of the island. It is an increasingly motorway-like road operated by ANAS . Work has been going on for a number of years to expand the important traffic axis. Many places were given a bypass , which is why several shorter sections of the original route were downgraded to provincial or municipal roads.

The SS 125, which branches off from the Cagliaris bypass (SS 554) at Quartuccio , leads directly north-east to Muravera. A variant, called SS 125var, on the other hand, leads from Quartuccio in the direction of Villasimius to the southeast and stays closer to the coast, then also to join the SS 125 in the north via Costa Rei .
