The Strada Statale 113 (SS 113), called Settentrionale Sicula , a state road Italy . It got its name from the fact that it runs along the north coast of Sicily . It often comes very close to the Tyrrhenian Sea . In large parts, the route should correspond to the course of the ancient Via Valeria , while in the Middle Ages the land connection from Palermo to Messina led through the mountainous interior of the island.

Route

The SS 113 begins in Messina and leads via Cefalù and Palermo to Trapani . The SS 113 dir. Litoranea leads to Ganzirri along the Stretto di Messina and circles the northeastern tip of Sicily via Mortelle, Sparta, Síndaro Marina and Orto Liuzzo, to reach the SS 113 again at Divieto , which crosses the Monti Peloritani directly from Messina . Essentially, the road runs near the coast, albeit partly on a slope, and crosses several Fiumare . Termini Imerese , Casteldaccia and Bagheria are on the route between Cefalù and Palermo . After Ficarazzi , the SS 113 reaches the city of Palermo at Acqua dei Corsari and then changes name several times: Via Messina Marine, Umberto I °, Francesco Crispi, passes the port and the Ucciardone. Because of the one-way street, it only reaches the original route at Piazza De Gasperi (Via Sampolo is only accessible from north to south) and leads over Via Resuttana and San Lorenzo to Tommaso Natale, past the Villa Boscogrande , with two barrier crossings over the line to Trapani often cause congestion. After Sferracavallo , Isola delle Femmine , Capaci , Villagrazia di Carini , Cinisi and Terrasini should be mentioned. At San Cataldo the route turns off from the Gulf of Castellammare towards Partinico, while the SS 187 runs along the coast to Castellammare del Golfo and then also to Trapani. The Settentrionale Sicula then connects Partinico , from where the SS 186 leads via Monreale to Palermo, with Alcamo and then turns south to Calatafimi . From there it goes west to Trapani. Southern connecting routes are the SS 119 from Alcamo to Castelvetrano and the SS 188A from Calatafimi to Salemi .

meaning

In the first years of the 21st century, the only direct road connection between Messina and Palermo was via the SS 113 section between Sant'Agata di Militello and Cefalù .

The importance of the SS 113 for long-distance traffic is reduced by the fact that first the A20 motorway , then the A19 and finally the A29 and A29dir run parallel to it. The Messina – Palermo and Palermo – Trapani railway lines also run largely parallel to the SS 113.
