The Fiumetorto – Messina railway is a railway line on Sicily in Italy . It was built from 1887 to 1895 and is part of the Berlin – Palermo railway axis .

history

Opening date Route section
April 20, 1887 Fiumetorto - Cefalù
June 20, 1889 Messina - San Filippo
August 20, 1890 San Filippo - Milazzo
September 27, 1890 Milazzo - Barcellona
June 15, 1891 Barcellona- Oliveri
May 25, 1892 Oliveri- Patti
November 20, 1893 Patti - Capo d'Orlando
March 25, 1894 Cefalù - Castelbuono
November 20, 1894 Castelbuono - Tusa
June 16, 1895 Tusa – Capo d'Orlando

The line was built from both endpoints; the gap was closed on September 19, 1895.

Between 1951 and 1955 the line was electrified and the section between Palermo and Fiumetorto was expanded to double-track.

The line has been expanded to two tracks since the 1980s, which for the most part can only be achieved with new lines. The longest engineering structure is the almost 13-kilometer-long Peloritana tunnel through the Peloritani Mountains near Messina, which went into operation on November 29, 2001.

Route description

The route essentially follows the Tyrrhenian Sea . From Patti- San Piero Patti, upgraded and new lines begin, most of which have been completed by Messina. In 1991 the new line Terme Vigliatore - San Filippo - Santa Lucia was opened. The new route resulted in the closure of the old route for the first time, as well as the closure of the Barcellona and Milazzo train stations in the city center . New stations were built on the new line, but far outside the city centers. A completely new line was also built between Pace de Mela and Rometta Messinese in 2009. Between Villafranca-Tirrena and Messina Scalo, the new, almost 13-kilometer-long Peloritano tunnel replaced the old line, which was already very difficult when the railway was built at the time. Before Messina Scalo, the line then meets the Messina – Syracuse railway line and ends at Messina Central Station .

Remarks
