The Bologna – Firenze high-speed line connects Florence , the capital of the Italian region of Tuscany , with Bologna , the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region . Since it went into operation on December 13, 2009, the travel time between the two cities has been 37 minutes.

The route is an important part of the TEN axis No. 1 and therefore of great importance for international traffic between Rome and Munich . The Bologna train station plays an important role as a node , as the branch to Milan from the TEN axis branches off here.

A total of around 71.8 km of the 78 km long route run in ten tunnels from 274 to 18,713 m in length. The tunnels are each single-tube-double-track with a usable cross-section of 82 m². The greatest distance between two emergency exits is 4.7 km.

The construction costs were around four billion euros.

Connection

Bologna Central Station

Bologna

The long-distance trains have been stopping at the Bologna Central Station since June 8, 2013 . Four platform edges were erected 23 meters below the surface for long-distance traffic on the Milan - Bologna - Firenze (and further) axis.

Florence

In Florence, the terminal station Firenze Santa Maria Novella is currently called into service .

Preparatory work for the new underground station Firenze Belfiore has begun. It is to be located in a 7 km long tunnel that crosses Florence from north ( Firenze Castello ) to east ( Campo di Marte ). The new station will be designed by Sir Norman Foster . A tram line and S-Bahn trains are to connect the new high-speed train station with the existing main train station and the city center. In 2006 the completion of the station was planned for 2010.

Italian speed record

During a test drive on February 3, 2009, an ETR-500 unit set an Italian speed record on rails. The train reached a speed of 362 km / h in the tunnel under Monte Bibele.
