Casteldaccia is a town and municipality of the Metropolitan City of Palermo in the Region of Sicily in Italy with 11,682 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
Casteldaccia is located 23 km southeast of Palermo on the Mediterranean coast. The inhabitants work mainly in industry and agriculture (wine, citrus fruits).
With the motorway exit Casteldaccia the place has a connection to the motorway A19 / E90. The place is on the railway line Palermo-Agrigento / Porto Empedocle .
The neighboring communities are Altavilla Milicia , Baucina , Bolognetta , Caccamo , Misilmeri , Santa Flavia , Trabia and Ventimiglia di Sicilia .
history
Casteldaccia has had the status of an independent municipality since 1854, but the existence of Casalia has been probable since Arab and Norman times, especially since documents can be found on the border with the neighboring municipality of Altavilla Milicia S. Maria di Campogrosso for the Norman period. Individual archaeological finds from the Contrada Ciandro could not be scientifically examined in their context. The toponym indicates that the Cantor of the Capella Palatina owned land here.
Attractions
- Parish church from the 18th century
- Palace tower from the 18th century (castle of the Salaparuta family)
economy
In Casteldaccia there is a winery as well as a pasta and edible oil factory of regional importance. The winery was founded by Duke Edoardo di Salaparuta in 1824. Today, Vini Corvo and Marsala producer Florio belong to ILLVA Saronno Holding, which, according to its own statements, is investing around € 30 million in the modernization and expansion of the production facilities and in the purchase of growing areas in a five-year plan.
In the summer, numerous Palermitans find holiday accommodation in the municipality, which can almost double the number of residents. This was already similar around 1900, as evidenced by a number of Art Nouveau villas (Liberty).
As in many places in Sicily, buccellato is one of the local specialties . A sagra del buccellato has been held in the castle every year since 2002 .
