Lercara Friddi is an Italian city in the metropolitan city of Palermo in the autonomous region of Sicily with 6626 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Lercara Friddi is 68 km south of Palermo . The residents mainly work in agriculture and handicrafts.

The neighboring municipalities are Castronovo di Sicilia , Prizzi , Roccapalumba and Vicari .

history

The present place was founded in 1605 by D. Baldassare Gomez. Before that there was a camp for the stagecoaches from Palermo to Agrigento . On the mountain Colle Madore , a settlement was Sicans found. The settlement dates from between the 7th and 6th centuries BC. Chr.

On December 25, 1893, during the uprising of the Fasci Siciliani, eleven farmers and sulfur miners were killed who had demonstrated for the abolition of taxes and better working conditions.

traffic

The Lercara Bassa station, which was operated until 2016 and where the narrow-gauge Lercara – Magazzolo line began until 1959 , was east of the city on the Palermo – Agrigento line . It will be replaced by the Lercara Diramazione train station, which is a little further from the city but will also provide connections to Caltanissetta .

At the city the SS 189 ends at the SS 188.
