Contessa Entellina is a city of Metropolitan city of Palermo in the Region of Sicily in Italy with 1,608 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
Contessa Entellina is located 75 km south of Palermo . The residents mainly work in agriculture.
The neighboring communities are Bisacquino , Campofiorito , Corleone , Giuliana , Monreale , Poggioreale ( TP ), Roccamena , Salaparuta ( TP ), Sambuca di Sicilia ( AG ) and Santa Margherita di Belice ( AG ).
After the rail traffic to Contessa Entellina was discontinued in 1959, the city can only be reached by road today.
history
The place was founded in 1450 by the Arbëresh . The Greeks settled here before that time. In 1875 the addition of Entellina was added to the name Contessa in memory of the ancient city of Entella. Entella was near the present municipality and was destroyed in 1224.
Viticulture
The wine-growing area in Contessa Entellina produces DOC wines that have had their "controlled designation of origin " since 1993. This was last updated on March 7, 2014.
The wines with the designation Contessa Entellina DOC are produced as the following types of wine: red , rosé and white wines as well as wines with the predicates "Riserva" or "Vendemmia tardiva" ( late harvest ).
