Alcamo (wine)

Alcamo is located in western Sicily and is known, together with surrounding communities, as a wine-growing region . It is about 70 km southwest of Palermo . For wines produced here that meet the requirements, there has been a DOC appellation (controlled designation of origin)since 1972. It was last changed on March 7, 2014.

Cultivation

The cultivation area falls both in the Free Municipal Consortium Trapani and in the metropolitan city of Palermo . It includes the entire municipality of Alcamo as well as parts of the municipalities of Calatafimi , Castellammare del Golfo , Gibellina , Balestrate , Camporeale , Monreale , Partinico , San Cipirello and San Giuseppe Jato .

In 2017, 13,773 hectoliters of DOC wine were produced from 238 hectares of vineyards.

In this wine-growing region, white , rosé , red and sparkling wines of the following typologies are produced. The denomination prescribes certain minimum quantities of grape varieties.

Blending wines :

  • Alcamo Bianco (white wine), also as sparkling wine ( Alcamo Spumante ), also Alcamo Vendemmia tardiva ( Alcamo " late harvest " ): at least 60% Catarratto Bianco comune and / or Catarratto bianco lucido , at most 40% (alone or together) Ansonica, Grillo, Grecanico, Chardonnay, Müller Thurgau and Sauvignon Blanc as well as - alternatively - a maximum of 20% other grape varieties that are approved for viticulture in Sicily.

  • Alcamo Rosso (red wine), also as Riserva and Novello ( young wine ): at least 60% Nero d'Avola, at most 40% (alone or together) Frappato, Sangiovese, Perricone, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and / or Syrah and a maximum of 10% other red grape varieties approved for wine-growing in Sicily.
  • Alcamo Rosato (rosè wine), also as sparkling wine ( Alcamo Spumante rosato ), may only be made from the following grape varieties: Nerello mascalese , Calabrese or Nero d'Avola , Sangiovese , Frappato , Perricone , Cabernet sauvignon , Merlot and / or Syrah . There are no percentages required.
