List of grape varieties

Perricone is a red wine that is cultivated in Sicily and, to a very limited extent, in Tunisia . It is recommended for planting in the Free Municipal Consortium of Agrigento and Trapani and in the Metropolitan City of Palermo , while it is approved in the Metropolitan City of Messina and the Free Municipal Consortium of Syracuse .

Perricone is approved in the DOC wines Contea di Sclafani , Delia Nivolelli and Sicilia . It is also used in the very rare red Marsala . Currently (2001) about 1195 hectares of vineyards are planted with Perricone.

The Perricone grape produces soft, brightly colored and alcoholic red wines . It is primarily as a blending Partner, or (under the name Pignatello ) for varietal IGT - wines used. It is assumed that it is related to or identical to the Barbera grape variety , but this seems unlikely in view of the different ampelographic varietal characteristics.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The tip of the shoot is flattened. It is only hairy like a cobweb. The greenish, shiny young leaves with their bronze-colored spots (anthocyanin spots) are also hairy or even hairless.
  • The medium-sized leaves are three- or five-lobed and hardly curved. The stem bay is lyren-shaped open. The blade is serrated. The teeth are set closely in comparison to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is blistered and rough.
  • The cylindrical or conical grape is small to medium-sized and has dense berries. The round berries are medium-sized and blue-black in color. The aroma of the berry is neutral. The berry skin is thick.

The berries ripen about 30 days after those of the Gutedel . According to international standards, it is already considered to ripen late. The variety is very susceptible to the vine diseases powdery mildew and downy mildew . The grape variety that sprouts early is only moderately vigorous and only produces medium-sized yields in the order of 40 to 60 hectoliters / hectare.
