List of grape varieties |
Catarratto Bianco comune is an Italian white wine variety .
distribution
This grape variety is grown almost exclusively in Sicily and the Italian region of Calabria . In Tunisia , some small plantings are also known that were brought there by Italian emigrants. With almost 65,000 hectares of vineyards, it is the most widely grown white variety in Italy after the Trebbiano family and the most important representative of the Catarratto family even before Catarratto Bianco lucido . In Sicily it is mainly grown in the free municipal consortia or metropolitan cities of Agrigento , Catania , Caltanissetta , Enna , Palermo , Syracuse and Trapani .
Properties and use
The late ripening variety produces acidic, aromatic and alcoholic wines. It is used for the production of marsala , vermouth and for the Vino da Tavola such as the famous Corvo, which are produced in large quantities on the island of Sicily . In the DOC wines Alcamo , Contea di Sclafani , Erice , Etna , Monreale , Salaparuta and Santa Margherita di Belice , it is the main component or blending partner.
Ampelographic variety characteristics and parentage
Catarratto bianco comune is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided. In a study published in 2008, both Catarratto bianco comune and Catarratto bianco lucido were related to the Garganega grape variety . Due to the not yet identified parents of the Garganega variety, the exact relationship cannot yet be specified. The same investigation suggests that the varieties Catarratto bianco comune and Catarratto bianco lucido are genetically identical and that they are merely clones of the same variety.
