Catarratto Bianco Lucido

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Catarratto Bianco lucido is a white wine that is grown almost exclusively on the island of Sicily . With almost 9,800 hectares of vineyards, it is the second most grown white variety of the Catarratto family in Italy after the Catarratto Bianco comune . It is recommended in the free municipal consortia or metropolitan cities of Agrigento , Caltanissetta , Catania , Enna , Palermo , Ragusa , Syracuse and Trapani .

The late-ripening variety produces straw-yellow to amber-colored, alcohol-rich wines that are used for the production of vermouth . In the Denominazione di origine controllata - white wines Alcamo , Menfi bianco, Sambuca di Sicilia bianco, Santa Margherita di Belice Catarrato, Santa Margherita di Belice bianco, Sciacca bianco and Sciacca riserva Rayana, it is the main component or blending partner .

Catarrato bianco lucido is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided. In a study published in 2008, both Catarratto bianco comune and Catarratto bianco lucido were related to the Garganega grape variety . Due to the not yet identified parents of the Garganega variety, the exact relationship cannot yet be specified. The same investigation suggests that the varieties Catarratto bianco comune and Catarratto bianco lucido are genetically identical and that they are merely clones of the same variety.

Synonyms: Catarratto Bianco Lustro, Castellaro.
