The Free Municipal Consortium Enna (Italian Libero consorzio comunale di Enna ) is an administrative unit of the Autonomous Region of Sicily in Italy . The capital is Enna . It was created through the transformation of the Province of Enna (Italian Provincia di Enna ) with Regional Law No. 8 of March 24, 2014 and the provisions of Regional Law No. 15 of August 4, 2015.
The Free Community Consortium is located in the center of Sicily in the Monti Erei and has no access to the sea. It is bordered to the north by the metropolitan city of Messina , to the east and south-east by the metropolitan city of Catania , to the south and southwest by the Free Municipal Consortium Caltanissetta and to the northwest by the metropolitan city of Palermo .
It is divided into 20 municipalities and, compared to the other municipal consortia or metropolitan cities, only sparsely populated. 162,368 inhabitants live in an area of 2,562 km² (as of December 31, 2019) . The Villa Romana del Casale from Roman times is located near Piazza Armerina , the second largest municipality of the municipal consortium . It has been declared a World Heritage Site.
