Barrafranca is a municipality in Enna consortium of municipalities outside the region Sicily in Italy with 12,580 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Barrafranca is 39 km southwest of Enna . The city is on the SS 191 which connects Piazza Armerina with Caltanissetta . The municipality covers an area of ​​53.64 km². The inhabitants live primarily from agriculture. Mainly grapes , olives , nuts and almonds are produced.

The neighboring communities are Mazzarino ( CL ), Piazza Armerina , Pietraperzia and Riesi (CL).

history

The ancient Hibla Heraia or Galeota or Galatina, which was then Romanized and given the name Collanania, was probably located here. In Norman times the place was called Convincino; around 1330 he came to the feudal property of the Barresi family. About two hundred years later, Matteo Barresi di Pietraperzia had work carried out to promote the development of the place and gave it its name, Barrafranca, which still exists today.
