Menfi is a town in the municipality of Agrigento consortium outdoors in the region Sicily in Italy .
Location and dates
Menfi is located about 55 kilometers northwest of Agrigento , the capital of the Free Community Consortium. The city has 12,262 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), who are mainly employed in industry, agriculture and knitwear.
Menfi, together with the neighboring communities of Sambuca di Sicilia , Santa Margherita di Belice and Sciacca, forms one of the most important wine-growing regions in Sicily. Since 1995 there has been a controlled designation of origin for quality wine ( Denominazione di origine controllata ) for the municipality's vineyards with the " DOC Menfi " .
Other neighboring communities are Castelvetrano ( TP ) and Montevago .
After the rail traffic to Menfi was discontinued in 1985, the place can only be reached by road today.
history
Menfi originated during the period of Arab domination . It was then called Burgiomilluso . The place was built around a fortress. Frederick II had the destroyed fortress rebuilt, the rest of the place fell apart. In 1698 the place was re-founded by Diego Tagliava Aragona. In 1968 the place was affected by an earthquake .

Town twinning
Menfi maintains the following cities twinning :
- Ettlingen , Baden-Württemberg : The friendship agreement has existed since 2004, the town twinning has existed since 2007.
- Morella in Spain since 1999
- Chivilcoy in the Argentine province of Buenos Aires
- Canelli in the province of Asti , since 1997
The town twinning with Ettlingen came about because in the middle of the 20th century many guest workers from the Menfi region came to Ettlingen because they were offered work there. Many of them found a new home there.
