Alessandria della Rocca is a town in the municipality of Agrigento consortium outdoors in the region Sicily in Italy .

Location and dates

Alessandria della Rocca is located 53 km north of Agrigento in the Monti Sicani area . The community has 2717 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) who mainly work in agriculture (cultivation of grain, fruit).

The neighboring municipalities are Bivona , Cianciana , San Biagio Platani , Sant'Angelo Muxaro and Santo Stefano Quisquina .

After the rail traffic to Alessandria della Rocca was discontinued in 1959, the place can only be reached by road today.

history

Alessandria della Rocca was founded in 1570 by Blasco Barresi. Until 1862 the place was called Alessandria della Pietra. The name comes from the sanctuary of Santa Maria della Rocca, which was built in the 17th century.

Attractions

The city has a regular and rectangular extension. The sights are the parish church from the 17th century, which is dedicated to Santa Maria del Pilar, and the sanctuary of Santa Maria della Rocca in the south of the place. According to tradition, a statue of the Blessed Virgin was found on the site of the sanctuary in the 17th century.
