Favara is a city and Italian commune in the free municipal consortium of Agrigento in the autonomous region of Sicily .
Location and dates
Favara is eleven kilometers east of Agrigento . 31,751 inhabitants live here (as of December 31, 2019), who mainly work in agriculture. In addition to cereals, oranges, watermelons, almonds, pistachios and olives, wine is also grown and processed.
The neighboring municipalities are Agrigento , Aragona , Castrofilippo , Comitini , Naro and Racalmuto .
history
The name Favara comes from Arab times . It is derived from Fawwara , which means water source in Arabic . Already in the 3rd millennium BC there lived in the area of Favara. BC people, as evidenced by a settlement and a Bronze Age necropolis in the area. The native Sicans were from the 7th century BC. Chr. Increasingly displaced by Greek colonists , who built a base on the mountain Caltafaraci, which borders Favara, which was later used under Roman rule. In the 9th century, the Favara region came under Arab rule. Today's place was built in the 13th century around the fort that was built in that century. At that time the place belonged to the Chiaramonte family .

Gastronomic specialties
Favara is known for its dessert "agnello pasquale" (German: Easter lamb). This dish based on almonds and pistachios is mainly eaten at Easter and is well known all over Italy. Another specialty is the "Minestra di San Giuseppe", a soup made from various types of vegetables and pasta.
Town twinning
Favara has been twinning with the Spanish city of Andújar in Andalusia since 2004 .
Personalities
The manager and physician Giuseppe Vita (* 1935) was born in Favara. Among other things, he was CEO of the pharmaceutical company Schering.
