Giuseppe Vita

Giuseppe Vita (born April 28, 1935 in Favara , Sicily ) is an Italian manager. He was Chairman of the Management Board of the Berlin pharmaceutical company Schering until 2001, Chairman of its Supervisory Board until 2006 and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Axel Springer SE from 2002 to 2019 . From 2012 to 2018 he was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Italian UniCredit SpA, whose subsidiary UniCredit Bank AG - known under the brand “Hypovereinsbank” (HVB) - is active in Germany.

Origin, family

Giuseppe Vita grew up on an estate in Sicily with 14 siblings. He is married, has two grown children and lives in Berlin-Tiergarten and Milan .

education

After graduating from high school in 1953, Vita studied medicine in Catania and Rome . After receiving his doctorate (1959, summa cum laude ) and the state examination as a doctor (1960), he was recognized as a specialist in radiology in 1961. With the aim of following his brother to New York , he left Italy and began in 1962 as an assistant at the X-ray Institute of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz .

Professional career

In 1964 he moved to the research department of Schering AG as a research assistant for contrast agent research and moved to West Berlin . In 1968 he moved up to the management of the pharmaceutical company and was entrusted as General Manager with the management of the subsidiary Schering SpA Italy in Milan, which he built up into a flourishing company.

In 1987 Vita returned to the Group's headquarters in Berlin and was initially appointed deputy and one year later a full board member of Schering AG. In June 1989 he took over the chairmanship of the board as successor to Horst Witzel .

Germany

Vita is a member of the Senate of the German National Foundation , which was founded by Helmut Schmidt . He is also Honorary Chairman of Axel Springer SE.

Italy

Vita has been a member of the General Council of Aspen Institute Italia and the Trilateral Commission , Group Italy, since 2012. He was also elected to the Board of Directors of the Istituto per gli Studi di Politica Internazionale (ISPI) in 2012. He has been Honorary Chairman of Deutsche Bank SpA Italy since 2002 .

Former positions and memberships in boards of trustees

After leaving the operational business at Schering, Giuseppe Vita moved there in 2001 to the post of Chairman of the Supervisory Board, which he held until 2006. There he last dealt with the takeover by Bayer AG for 16.9 billion euros.

He was also chairman of the supervisory board of Hugo Boss AG (2000–2008), Deutz AG (2006–2009), and a member of the supervisory board of Allianz Lebensversicherungs-AG , Continental AG , Herlitz AG, Gerling insurance in Cologne, the Evonik Degussa (formerly Degussa AG) and Vattenfall Europe AG (2002–2008 and already from 1990 Bewag (Berlin) ) as well as in Italy chairman of the board of directors of Deutsche Bank Italia and later of Allianz SpA , chairman of the board of directors of Gruppo Banca Leonardo and Member of the Board of Directors of Barilla SpA in Parma, Humanitas SpA in Milan and Pirelli SpA. In Switzerland, he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Banca Leonardo SA. From February 2009 until the end of 2012, Vita was also a member of the Supervisory Board of Ernst Freiberger's Medical Park AG . From 2006 to 2007 he was chairman of the Robert Koch Foundation . and from 2009 sat first on the supervisory board and then on the foundation board of the Dussmann Group . He was also a member of the Presidium of the German Society for Foreign Policy until 2012 .

In Italy, Giuseppe Vita was Chairman of the Board of Directors of UniCredit SpA from May 2012 to April 2018 .
