Santo Stefano Quisquina is a town in the Free Church consortium Agrigento in the region Sicily in Italy .
Location and dates
Santo Stefano Quisquina is 75 km north of Agrigento . The municipality has 4337 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) who mainly work in agriculture. There are a few cheese dairies in the village that prepare various types of ricotta , which have become famous beyond Sicily.
The Platani , Turvoli and Magazzolo rises near the village .
The neighboring municipalities are Alessandria della Rocca , Bivona , Cammarata , Casteltermini , Castronovo di Sicilia and San Biagio Platani .
After the rail traffic to Santo Stefano Quisquina was discontinued in 1959, the place can only be reached by road today.
history
There were already settlements here in Arab times . The current place was built at the beginning of the 14th century. The origin of the name Santo Stefano Quisquina can be derived from the Arabic koskin, in the dark, and the adjoining monastery of Santo Stefano.
Attractions
The Prince's Palace dates back to 1745 and is located in Piazza Castello. There is an 18th century fountain on the square. The Purgatorio church and the Maria-Kolleg are located on Via Roma and both also date from the 18th century. The parish church of San Nicolo di Bari was built in the 16th century by Federico Chiaromonte. The apse shows frescoes from the 19th century. Next to the parish church is the SS. Sacramento Church and the Francesco de Sales Church. Both were built in the 18th century.
About five kilometers away on Monte Quisquina is the former Santo Stefano monastery. In the rooms of the monastery there is now a museum about the everyday life of the friars and the rural population. The monastery can be visited on request.
Next to it is the hermitage of Saint Rosalia , who is said to have lived here for a few years before going to Monte Pellegrino . In a grotto you can see a sculpture in honor of the saint, also called Santuzza by the locals.
Festivals
The feast of Santa Rosalia is celebrated on the first Sunday of June, and St. Calogero has an annual feast on the night of June 17th to June 18th.
