The Monte Pellegrino ("Pilgrim Mountain") is a mountain on the north coast of Sicily . It is located about four kilometers north of the city center of Palermo . The maximum height of the Kalkberg is 606 meters.

Drawings from the Paleolithic age carved into rocks, which were discovered in the Addaura caves on Monte Pellegrino, show that people lived here as early as prehistoric times. In the 3rd century BC BC Pyrrhos besieged the mountain in the fight against the Carthaginians. From 248 BC He was occupied by Hamilcar until Palermo and the surrounding area in 245 BC. Were conquered by the Romans.

Monte Pellegrino has been an important pilgrimage site since the 17th century . In 1625, the undestroyed body of St. Rosalia was found in a 25 meter deep cave . When their relics were brought to Palermo, an epidemic of the plague ended and St. Rosalia was declared the city's patron saint . The cave is at an altitude of 458 meters. A baroque chapel was built in front of the entrance in 1625. Inside there is a glass reliquary with the reclining figure of St. Rosalia. The sculptor Gregorio Tedesco created the marble statue, which is wrapped in a precious dress of gold, in the 17th century.

Goethe described Monte Pellegrino in his Italian trip as “the most beautiful promontory in the world”. In the summer months, the Parco della Favorita and the pine forests of the mountain are popular destinations for the Palermitans. There are regular musical and theatrical performances on a viewing platform with a statue of Santa Rosalia. Every year on July 14th and 15th, St. Rosalia at the “Festino”. On the night of September 3rd to 4th, there is an annual pilgrimage to the mountain in honor of the patron saint, the Acchianata Santa Rosalia.

A hill climb that was carried out in the 1950s is now only carried out with historic vehicles and not at top speed.

In 1996 the area around Monte Pellegrino was declared a nature reserve Riserva Naturale Monte Pellegrino in order to protect the caves with stone-age rock paintings.
