Nerello Mascalese is a red grape variety that is the most widely grown grape variety in Sicily after the Nero d'Avola variety . It ranks above the Nerello Cappuccio variety . There are cultivation recommendations for the free municipal consortia and metropolitan cities of Agrigento , Catania , Enna , Messina , Palermo , Ragusa , Syracuse and Trapani . It is also approved in the province of Catanzaro in the mainland region of Calabria .
The late-ripening variety is single-origin and often blended into table wine of acceptable quality. In the DOC region Etna , it is processed into very high-quality, tannin - rich and balanced red wines . Nerello Mascalese is found on the slopes of the Etna volcano at an altitude of 800 to 1000 m above sea level. NN planted. If the grapes are pressed in the destemmed state , the specialty there is called pesta imbotta . In addition, the variety can be used in the rare red Marsala .
In a study published in 2008, Nerello Mascalese was suspected to be related to the Sangiovese grape variety . Because the parents of the Sangiovese variety have not yet been determined beyond doubt, the exact relationship cannot yet be specified.
The forested area was around 12,270 hectares at the end of the 1990s.
