List of grape varieties

Nero d'Avola ( Italian , "Black from Avola ") is a synonym for the red Calabrese grape variety , probably of Sicilian origin, which is widespread in southern Italy and is also called "Principe Siciliano" (Sicilian prince) by the locals. Nero d'Avola is currently considered the most important grape variety in Sicily and is there on 18,000 hectares of vineyards (2013). It is one of the traditional grape varieties in Sicily and is also known under the name "Calabrese", which gives Calabria as the presumed origin of the grape variety, although it is rarely grown there. The forerunners of the vine are more likely to be found in Greece .

The Nero d'Avola is often used as a blend with Frappato , and more rarely with the Nerello Mascalese and Perricone varieties . Lately the internationally known grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot and Syrah have also been blended . Since the 1990s, it has also been used increasingly single-variety , often with reduced yields. The wine is usually deep dark (hence the name component "black") and concentrated, without lacking the necessary acidity .
