Riesi (wine)

White , rosé and red wines are produced under the name Riesi DOC in the Caltanissetta Free Community Consortium in Sicily . Since 2001, the wines have had a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC), which was last updated on March 7, 2014.

Cultivation

The cultivation is limited to the following municipalities: Butera , Riesi and Mazzarino (all in the free municipal consortium Caltanissetta). In 2018, 996 hl DOC wines were produced.

generation

The denomination enables the production of blended wines and almost single-origin wines. In addition, sparkling wines ( Spumante ) and late harvest (“Vendemmia tardiva”) are made possible. The blending wines are:

  • Riesi rosso : must consist of at least 80% Nero d'Avola and / or Cabernet Sauvignon (individually or together). A maximum of 20% other red grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Sicily region may be added.
  • Riesi rosato : must consist of 50–75% Nero d'Avola and furthermore 25–50% Nerello Mascalese and / or Cabernet Sauvignon . The remaining percent may be other grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Sicily region.
  • Riesi bianco (also called “Spumante” or “Vendemmia tardiva”): must consist of at least 75% Ansonica and / or Chardonnay (individually or together). The remaining percent may be other white grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Sicily region.
