Bino

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bino (actually Benedetto Arico ; born April 24, 1953 in Palermo ; † October 19, 2010 there ) was an Italian pop singer .

Career

Bino initially studied architecture in order to take over his father's company. But then he turned his back on Italy and came to Germany as a musician in 1975, initially to Schopfheim in the Black Forest. In nearby Bad Säckingen he joined the group I Figli Di Yuma, with whom he toured the region and Switzerland. Then Arico came to Oldenburg , where he sometimes worked as an ice cream seller, sometimes as a singer at festivals, and finally to Hamburg, where producer Rainer Felsen from the Pingo Music label noticed him.

With the song Mama Leone Bino landed his greatest success in 1978. The title was composed and written by Drafi Deutscher under his pseudonym Renate Vaplus and published for the first time in 1976 with Ruth Handel on Polydor. With the very soft and rather folksy dreamy arrangement, the title was not a success and so it was released on March 3, 1978 with Mike Mareen on CBS in a more modern version. When this version wasn't really picking up speed either, the record company CARRERE decided to record the new arrangement again in the summer of the same year with an authentic young Italian from Palermo, and the right mix of success was found. After the success in Germany, the song was recorded in an Italian version for which Bino himself wrote the lyrics. On November 23, 1978, both versions were in the top 10 of the German charts (positions 4 and 5) at the same time. Bino was number 1 in Austria for eight weeks and number 1 on the Swiss charts for four weeks . World was Mama Leone sold 20 million times. In 1997 he dedicated his song to the deceased Catholic nun Mother Teresa . With Bambino (18th place in Austria), also penned by Drafi Deutscher, he had a second, but much smaller, success.

In the 1980s and 1990s Bino ran various bars in Oldenburg or was involved in them. "Viva l'artista" was the name of his restaurant on Donnerschweer Straße from 1993-1998 , where music sessions were often held. During this time, Bino worked for other musicians as a producer, including the pop singer Oliver Lukas.

Together with Drafi Deutscher, Bino produced in 2003 under the name La Dolce Vita feat. Bino & Drafi released a single with the pieces Buona sera and Muy bien , which was published by Deutsche Austrophon. However, the single did not have any notable success despite a good media presence.

Bino lived with his partner Katrin on Mallorca . He died of cancer in Palermo at the age of 57.
