history

Poggioreale ruins

Excavations near Poggioreale revealed traces of a settlement from the 7th century BC. Proven. The old village was founded in 1642 at an altitude of 393 m in the Gibelliner Mountains. The settlement was destroyed in the earthquake in the Belice valley in 1968 and completely abandoned by the residents. Unlike in neighboring communities such as Salaparuta or Gibellina, the houses had not collapsed completely, so the old village seems to be intact from a distance, but in reality it is a ghost town . For the Palermitan singer-songwriter Pippo Pollina , who lives in Zurich , this ghost town served as a photo backdrop for the CD booklet of the album Il Sole Che Verrà (2017). A few years after the earthquake, the new village was rebuilt a few kilometers down the valley.
