Custonaci is a city in the Free Community Consortium Trapani in the region of Sicily in Italy with 5461 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
Custonaci is located 20 km east of Trapani . The city covers an area of 69 km². They live mainly from agriculture and the extraction and processing of marble .
The districts are Cornino, S. Lucia and Purgatorio. The neighboring municipalities are Buseto Palizzolo , Castellammare del Golfo , San Vito lo Capo and Valderice .
history
The place was created in the 18th century through settlement of undeveloped land.
Attractions
The sanctuary of the Madonna of Custonaci is worth seeing, it was a place of worship in the 14th century. In the 16th century shelters and fortifications were built to visit the sanctuary.
Events
Two events are important for the place: the feast of the Madonna of Custonaci, which takes place at the end of August, and the Presepe vivente, during which a “living nativity scene” is presented in front of the Grotta Scurati at the foot of Monte Cofano during the Christmas season . It not only includes the actual Christmas story with the Holy Family with the shepherds, but around a hundred people in historical costumes, like a Neapolitan nativity scene, represent the whole life of a medieval village with handicrafts, agriculture and so on.
