San Vito Lo Capo is a municipality in the Free Municipal Consortium Trapani in the region of Sicily in Italy with 4818 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

The inhabitants live on an area of ​​59 km². The municipality is located 36 km northeast of Trapani on Capo San Vito , the western tip of the Gulf of Castellammare . The inhabitants live from tourism , fishing or the processing of marble . Until the 17th century the place was the seat of a tonnara (tuna fishing ground ). Districts ( fractions ) are Macari and Castelluzzo.

The neighboring municipalities are: Castellammare del Golfo and Custonaci .

history

The name of the place is derived from the martyr San Vito . Today's sanctuary (ital. Santuario ) has undergone some renovations over the centuries. The first building from the 14th century was a small chapel. In order to offer protection to the numerous pilgrims, it was expanded into a fortress from the end of the 15th century. The fort is now a church. The community became independent in 1952 and is now a popular seaside resort.
