The Monte Cofano ( trunk mountain ) is a mountain lying on a headland in the Free Municipal Consortium Trapani , Region Sicily , Italy .
Geography and data
Monte Cofano is part of the Monti di Trapani and is about 15 km north of Trapani , on a promontory on the Tyrrhenian Sea , where the Gulf of Bonagia and the Gulf of Cofano meet near Custonaci . It measures 659 m slm and is located in the middle of the rather small nature reserve of the same name. At the foot of the mountain is the small town of Cornino.
history
The name of Monte Cofano is probably derived from the Greek word kóphinos ( basket ), which is due to the special appearance of the mountain. On its summit there is also the ruin of a building with a cistern from the early 15th century, which was used to guard the coast. At the foot of the mountain there are still two towers that belonged to a former tonnara ( tuna factory ).
Nature reserve
Monte Cofano is located in the rather small nature reserve Riserva naturale orientata Monte Cofano , which is very popular with hikers. The nature reserve connects several Mediterranean ecosystems , including the Mediterranean prairie, which can be found almost all over the island. In addition, the nature reserve offers a unique rock flora with plants that are only found in this area.
