Prizzi is a town of the Metropolitan City of Palermo in the Region of Sicily in Italy with 4508 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Prizzi is 90 km south of Palermo . The inhabitants work mainly in agriculture and in the production of dairy products and fertilizers.

The neighboring municipalities are Campofelice di Fitalia , Castronovo di Sicilia , Corleone , Lercara Friddi , Palazzo Adriano and Vicari .

After the rail traffic to Prizzi was discontinued in 1959, the place can only be reached by road today.

history

Prizzi is one of the oldest settlements in Sicily. Remains of a settlement from the 8th to 6th centuries BC were found. From the 4th century BC. BC Punians , Greeks and Romans lived here .

The origins of today's city go back to the founding of the Normans . In 1150 the community became the property of a Cistercian monastery .

After various feudal lords, Prizzi came into the possession of the Bonanno family until 1812.

Festivals

The Holy Week is celebrated in a special way. In addition to the usual processions, a traditional dance is performed, the Ballo dei Diavoli (Dance of the Devils). Dancers masked as the devil and death march through the town and are ultimately symbolically defeated by Jesus and the Virgin Mary in the perpetual struggle between good and evil.
