Isaac Beeckman

Isaac Beeckman (born December 10, 1588 in Middelburg , † May 19, 1637 in Dordrecht ) was a Dutch philosopher and scientist.

Beeckman was born in Middelburg . He studied literature and philosophy in Leiden and completed a medical degree in Caen in 1618 . After working for a short time in his father's business, he became vice-principal in Utrecht and later in Rotterdam . In 1627 he became rector of the Dordrecht Latin School. He died there at the age of 48.

Beeckman was a student of Simon Stevin . He was the teacher of Johan de Witt and was a close friend of René Descartes , who dedicated his first book Musicae compendium to him. They later fell out over the question of whether Beeckman was jointly responsible for Descartes' mathematical findings. At that time, Beeckman was counted among the most learned people in Europe.
