Santa Cristina Gela (in Arbëresh , IPA : [ ar'bəreʃ ] : Sëndahstina ) is an Italian municipality in the metropolitan city of Palermo in the autonomous region of Sicily in Italy with 997 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Santa Cristina Gela is about 30 km southeast of Palermo . The inhabitants work mainly in agriculture and sheep breeding.

The neighboring municipalities are Altofonte , Belmonte Mezzagno , Marineo , Misilmeri , Monreale and Piana degli Albanesi .

history

The place was founded in 1691 by 82 Arbëresh farmers from Piana degli Albanesi.

An old Albanian dialect is still spoken in Santa Cristina Gela today .

The parish church dates from the 18th century.
