Alia is an Italian commune in the metropolitan city of Palermo in the autonomous region of Sicily with 3510 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Alia is 77 kilometers southeast of Palermo . The inhabitants live mainly from agriculture and handicrafts.

The neighboring municipalities are Caccamo , Castronovo di Sicilia , Montemaggiore Belsito , Roccapalumba , Sclafani Bagni and Valledolmo .

history

Feudal Lalia was founded during the Arab rule in Sicily . From this the feudal houses Yhale, Gurfa, Ottumarano and Kharse emerged.

In 1296 the property of the House of Yhale was transferred to the feudal lord of Lalia. In 1366 the feudal house of Lalia and the land belonging to it was bought by Reinaldo Crispo da Messina, the land was cultivated and the house remained uninhabited for years. In 1408 the feudal house is inhabited again.

In 1537 the fiefdom was taken over by Vincenzo Imbarbara, in 1568 by Giovanni Crispo e Villarant Baron von Prizzi, and in 1600 by Pietro Celestri Margrave of Santa Croce. In 1617 Donna Francesca Cifuentes (widowed Celestri), Baroness von Lalia, was given to the Spanish King Philip III When she asked to colonize the estate, she got permission to build houses, prisons and churches, and to appoint the supreme commander, captain, judge and other officers. This is the hour of birth of Alia

In 1820 there is an uprising of the coal workers against the Bourbons , which leads to the storming of the district judge and the destruction of the notarial records. In 1848 there is a popular uprising that leads to the burning of the Alia law books. In 1857 the place was transferred to the Prince of Sant'Elia.

On August 2, 1862, Giuseppe Garibaldi stopped in Alia on his way to unite Italy.

Filippo Cortesi , Archbishop and Diplomat of the Holy See, was born in Alia in 1876.

  • Church of Santa Rosalia from the 19th century, a Christian church used to stand here
  • Parish church from the 17th century, later the aisles were added. The Church is consecrated to Our Lady of Grace
  • Gurfa grottoes ( Grotte della Gurfa ), from ancient times , dwellings or graves carved into the rock
