The Zeppelinheim train station is the stopping point for the Rhein-Main S-Bahn and regional traffic in the Zeppelinheim district of Neu-Isenburg . In terms of urban development, it is located on the outskirts and borders Frankfurt am Main Airport . The two platforms with a total length of 200 m each are located in an island position between the connecting curve to Frankfurt am Main Airport long-distance train station . The platforms can be reached via an underpass. At the entrance from the Zeppelinheim side, a display board shows the arrival and departure times of buses and trains. The former loading ramp or the industrial connection in the northern part of the stop is now closed. This was reached via the third passing track east of the main line. The former station building and the level crossing were removed with the construction of the connecting curve between the Riedbahn and the airport long-distance station.

The stop is served by the Rhein-Main S-Bahn with the S7 and RB 70 lines. Deutsche Bahn uses class 430 multiple units and Bombardier Twindexx double-decker trains here . The breakpoint is approached around the clock. From 10:52 p.m. to 4:22 a.m. at least every hour, with at least two journeys made with the RB 70 at night. This applies on weekdays as well as on weekends. The reason are passengers with the destination airport and Cargo City South, who have short distances from here to their workplace.

The Zeppelinheim station is the start and destination stop of the OF-51 bus, which is operated by the Neu-Isenburg municipal utility. It ensures a connection via the Gehspitz industrial park to Neu-Isenburg station with stops on the S3 and S4. The regional bus line OF-64 ensures a bus connection with a bus stop on school days in the direction of Dreieich and Frankfurt Airport.

history

The station was opened on October 1, 1901 as a stop at Mitteldick at the height of the forest restaurant of the same name and initially served to develop the large contiguous forest area Mitteldick as a local recreation area for the residents of Frankfurt.

However, this forest was also increasingly used as an economic factor. Pit wood was needed in the growing mining industry. In order to be able to fetch the wood from this forest area and transport it away, the Grand Ducal Hessian Forest Administration decided to build an approximately 17 kilometer long forest railway to Klaraberg am Main, west of Kelsterbach. There the wood was loaded onto ships and transported down the Main. The crossing point was the Mitteldick train station.

In 1915 the station received two additional overtaking tracks.

In 1943 the station was called the Rhein-Main airport . Frankfurt Airport for airships was built to the west of the station. It was the take-off and landing point for zeppelins from all over the world, the predecessor of Frankfurt Airport.

The kiosk at Haltpunkt Mitteldick soon changed its name to "Weltflughafen Mitteldick"

The station was later given its current name after the Zeppelinheim settlement that had been built nearby since 1935 . In 1995 the historic station building was demolished.

Terminal 3 of Frankfurt Airport is to be built about one kilometer southwest of Zeppelinheim train station. In the course of the new Rhine / Main – Rhine / Neckar line and the new Frankfurt RheinMain plus traffic concept , three options were considered for developing this terminal by rail. Two of them provided that the Zeppelinheim train station would be used as a stop and the connection to the airport would be made via a bus or an extension of the SkyLine gondola. The third proposal was for an S-Bahn loop that branches off the Riedbahn south of the station and has a station directly below the terminal. The latter variant achieved the best benefit-cost ratio.
