The Bombardier Twindexx Vario ( spelling TWINDEXX Vario ) is a series of double-decker cars from Bombardier Transportation that are used by Deutsche Bahn in regional and long-distance transport. In contrast to the older generations of Bombardier double-deck cars , the Twindexx is also offered as a railcar . The powered end cars are sold in Germany as the 445 and 446 series .

The Bombardier Twindexx Vario is part of the Twindexx family, which also includes the Twindexx Express .

properties

The Twindexx Vario is offered in three versions:

  • Railcars at both ends and one to six intermediate cars
  • Railcar and control car , also with up to two intermediate cars
  • Locomotive-hauled push-pull train with control car and up to nine intermediate cars

The single wagons can be used flexibly and can also be coupled with older double-decker wagons. Since the multiple units can be flexibly formed like wagon trains with a locomotive, the multiple units have the UIC type code 91, which stands for electric locomotives . The intermediate cars have UIC car numbers .

The non-powered control and intermediate cars run on Görlitz IX bogies . FlexCompact motor bogies are used in the railcar (the manufacturer writes about the “powered control car”). The bogies are manufactured in the Bombardier plant in Siegen.

So far, the maximum speed of all vehicles produced is 160 km / h. The manufacturer also offers an option with a top speed of 189 km / h.

Framework agreement from Deutsche Bahn

The German railway and its predecessors already implemented since 1952 double-deck coaches from Görlitz one. This plant has been owned by Bombardier Transportation since 1998. At the beginning of 2009, Bombardier Transportation and Deutsche Bahn signed a framework agreement for the delivery of 800 double-decker cars from the Twindexx Vario series (also known as Dosto 2010 ) with a total volume of up to 1.5 billion euros. The framework agreement provides for the order of railcars or control cars with intermediate cars .

Twindexx Vario trains from DB Regio and DB Fernverkehr have so far been ordered under this contract .

Intercity 2

Since December 12, 2015, DB Fernverkehr has been using Intercity trains made up of double-decker cars under the name Intercity 2 ( IC2 for short ). For this purpose, 27 train units were initially procured, each consisting of four double-decker intermediate cars , one double-decker control car and a locomotive of the Bombardier Traxx class P160 AC2 (DB 146.5) designed for 160 km / h . The double-decker cars are designed for a maximum speed of 189 km / h, but due to the separate approval procedure required for this (with Bombardier TRAXX P189 AC locomotives that have yet to be ordered), the trains will only be able to travel at 160 km / h in the long term be admitted.

By procuring the double-decker Intercitys, vehicle capacities were to be created as a matter of urgency in order to increase the vehicle reserve for DB long-distance transport. The value of the contract awarded to Bombardier Transportation in 2011 was put at 362 million euros. The cost of a train with five cars and a class 146.5 locomotive is 17 million euros.

The trains have 468 seats, 70 of them in first class. There is no bistro or restaurant, instead there will be catering on the square on individual sections of the route. Under the name IC Café Team , LSG Sky Chefs employees offer travelers cold and hot drinks, snacks and baked goods. The trains have, among other things, cell phone amplifiers and a vehicle-bound wheelchair ramp. An Intercity 2 set consists of a second class control car, three second class intermediate cars and a first class intermediate car to which the locomotive is coupled. The doors of the intermediate cars are located above the bogies (so-called high-floor entry), so that both the lower and upper floors can only be reached by stairs. The lower floor of the control car can be reached without barriers through the low-floor entrances between the bogies and is equipped with bicycle parking spaces and a barrier-free toilet. The upper floor is not barrier-free and is reached in the control car via two flights of stairs.

The use of the double-deck intercity trains - now called Intercity 2 ( IC2 ) - began with the timetable change in December 2015 on IC line 56 (Leipzig - Hanover - Norddeich).

Regional multiple units

A Twindexx railcar of the Schleswig-Holstein regional train

For regional traffic, double-decker multiple units have been developed, which consist of two multiple units and the latest generation of double-decker intermediate cars lined up in between. The wagons of a unit are connected with screw couplings so that, unlike conventional multiple units, the driver can put together an individual combination of trains when shunting in regular operation . However, this is only practiced with the pre-assembled Twindexx multiple units in exceptional cases and malfunctions. At the ends of the driver's cab, on the other hand, the Scharfenberg type 10 couplings that are customary in railcars are used, which enables multiple multiple units ( wings ) to be connected and disconnected in a short time. The railcar series 445 and 446 differ in the entry height.

North-south network Berlin-Brandenburg

The first use of the multiple units in Germany was originally supposed to take place from December 2014 on the north-south network of the transport association Berlin-Brandenburg of DB Regio Nordost . Five five-part double-decker multiple units of the type "Twindexx Vario" were ordered for the line RE5 Rostock - Berlin - Lutherstadt Wittenberg. Two railcars are to be used per train. These multiple units were not delivered by March 2017, so the trains will continue to be hauled by locomotives.

Schleswig-Holstein

16 multiple units, each consisting of two multiple units and two intermediate cars, are to run from Hamburg to Kiel and Flensburg within the Schleswig-Holstein local transport network . Since Bombardier was unable to deliver the railcars, the start of operations originally planned for December 2014 did not materialize. Instead, the new 2nd class intermediate cars have been running with the existing 1st / 2nd class intermediate cars, control cars and locomotives since December 2015. In July 2017 it was announced that an additional multiple unit would be ordered. The first multiple units have also been in service since the end of September 2017. At the end of November 2017, it became known that the railcars were not available in sufficient numbers and could not be used in multiple traction. Therefore, a replacement concept was initially implemented. On January 8, 2018, the wing concept on the RE7 line (Hamburg - Kiel / Flensburg) started with a reduced number of railcars. Since then, there has been no change to Kiel on this line in Neumünster.

Since the start of operations, technical malfunctions have regularly occurred in the vehicles used, so that too few vehicles are available for scheduled operation. Individual trips must therefore be canceled or made in a single traction with half the capacity. In these cases, the RE70 line between Kiel and Hamburg is driven with double-decker wagons hauled by a locomotive, while the RE7 line from Hamburg to Kiel and Flensburg requires a change in Neumünster, as too few vehicles are available for the wing.

In March 2019, a 17th train went into operation, consisting of multiple units 445 103 and 445 104.

Railcar 445 013 after the accident in Alt Duvenstedt at the Neumünster freight yard.

On May 8, 2019, at 4:36 a.m., a train on the RE7 line from Flensburg to Hamburg collided in Alt Duvenstedt with a heavy load transport that had got stuck on a level crossing. 36 passengers were injured in the collision, two of them seriously. The wreck from railcars 445 013 and 445 029 has been standing at the Neumünster freight yard since then.

Main Spessart network

DB Regio Franken intended to operate the Main-Spessart network (Frankfurt am Main – Würzburg – Bamberg) with twelve four-part Twindexx multiple units from December 2015. These should offer 400 seats in the second and 25 seats in the first class. At the end of February 2015 it was announced that it would not be deployed until 2017, due to increased security requirements.

Upper Bavaria

As of December 2016, the DB Regio Oberbayern wanted to use Twindexx Vario multiple units on the Augsburg - Treuchtlingen - Nuremberg and Treuchtlingen - Ingolstadt - Munich routes. In June 2013, it won the associated BEG tender for the Ringzug West / NBS network . For this purpose, it has ordered three four- and 15 six-car multiple units from Bombardier. The units consist of two multiple units and two or four intermediate cars. The value of the order, which was called up from the existing framework agreement, is 216 million euros. Currently (March 2018) the trains are on the routes Nuremberg - Treuchtlingen - Ingolstadt - Munich and Nuremberg - Treuchtlingen - Augsburg.

Rhine-Main / Rhine-Neckar

Also in the Rhine-Main / Rhine-Neckar overlap area, the tariff areas of the RMV and the VRN , 7 three- and 17 four-part brand new Twindexx trains without pure control cars will be used from December 2017 as part of the new transport contract. The aim is to strengthen the Mannheim - Biblis - Frankfurt Riedbahn and the Rhine-Main-Neckar connection along the Bergstrasse (Mannheim / Heidelberg - Darmstadt - Frankfurt). For the first time, the vehicles have an entry height of 730 millimeters above the top of the rails for this call. As an external distinguishing feature, this leads to smaller windows in the area above the entrance doors. The low-entry cars with entry in the lower floor otherwise have an entry height of 600 millimeters and the high-entry cars with the entrances in the mezzanine above the bogies of 1150 millimeters. Due to the deviations from the other Regio-Twindexx units, the vehicles of the Main-Neckar network are run as class 446.

Dresden region

The Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe intends to order 15 railcars for the Dresden S-Bahn and let them run together with the existing cars. These are to run on repeater services on the S1 and S2 lines, replacing the 143 series locomotives . The Free State of Saxony is hoping for support for the financing. The first railcars could not be used until 2022 at the earliest.
