LSG Sky Chefs is the catering subsidiary of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. With a global market share of 30 percent, it is the largest provider of on- board catering . With a turnover of 714 million euros in 2011, LSG ranks third among the largest system restaurateurs in Germany on the German market. Competitors are Gategroup and Servair .

Lufthansa plans to sell LSG Sky Chefs to Gategroup so that it can concentrate more on pure flight services in the future. A corresponding agreement was concluded at the end of 2019, the antitrust authorities still have to approve it.

LSG Lufthansa Service Holding AG , the parent company of LSG Sky Chefs , is based in Neu-Isenburg . With the takeover of the American Airlines subsidiary Sky Chefs, Inc. by LSG Lufthansa Service GmbH (LSG), the LSG Sky Chefs umbrella brand was launched in 1993. The abbreviation LSG is an abbreviation for Lufthansa Service GmbH, later for Lufthansa Service Gesellschaft.

The 133 companies of the LSG Sky Chefs group with 210 operations in 51 countries serve over 300 airlines worldwide ; Around 578 million meals are currently produced annually. At Frankfurt Airport alone, LSG Sky Chefs handles 350 Lufthansa and partner flights a day through its subsidiaries LSG Sky Chefs Frankfurt International GmbH and LSG Sky Chefs Frankfurt ZD GmbH. In addition to the actual catering, the provision of the on-board service equipment and the associated logistics as well as the management of the on-board service and on-board sales are part of the business areas of LSG Sky Chefs. Consolidated sales increased strongly , primarily due to the acquisition of Sky Chefs, Inc.

While LSG Sky Chefs made a turnover of 685 million euros in Germany in 2010, it was 714 million in 2011, with the number of establishments remaining constant at 19.

Frozen production

Due to increasing demand, LSG Sky Chefs produces more than 34 million frozen meals worldwide every year . The frozen food operations of the LSG Sky Chefs group are located in Alzey (around 50 kilometers from Frankfurt Rhein-Main Airport), Pittsburgh (USA) and Qingdao (China). There are also joint ventures in Rome (Italy) and Antalya (Turkey) that specialize in snacks, desserts and salads.

The operating company of the Alzey location, LSG-Sky Food GmbH, was founded in 1994 as a subsidiary of LSG Lufthansa Service Holding AG.

The Alzey facility produces around 500,000–700,000 frozen meals per week and supplies airlines such as Lufthansa , American Airlines , Alitalia and many others with almost 27 million meals a year. The production in Alzey has a menu selection of up to 600 dishes and 100 ethnic variants.

Through its subsidiary LSG-Food & Nonfood Handel GmbH, LSG Sky Chefs has been operating the Ringeltaube employee markets with 21 branches in Germany for over 40 years .

Spiriant

Today's SPIRIANT GmbH has been developing aircraft equipment and accessories as well as relevant logistical services for around 20 years. The actual SPIRIANT brand (original spelling only capital letters) was presented on April 9, 2013 at the World Travel and Onboard Service Expo (WTCE) in Hamburg. Previously, the products were sold under the name of LCL Lufthansa Catering Logistik (later LSG Sky Chefs Catering Logistik). The offer includes the design, development and procurement of on-board service and equipment such as dishes and accessories, on-board kitchen equipment and merchandise . As a 100% subsidiary of LSG Sky Chefs , Spiriant is managed by the management of LSG Lufthansa Service Holding AG . SPIRIANT is headquartered in Neu-Isenburg . One of the most important competitors is deSter, the subsidiary of Gategroup Holding based in Switzerland.

Hygiene Violations in North America

During inspections by the US food authority , LSG Sky Chefs was repeatedly warned for violating hygiene regulations in the processing and preparation of food.

In December 1996, LSG Sky Chefs received a warning from the FDA for inadequate refrigeration in the storage of perishable food, dirt on equipment and floors, too low dish water temperatures and problems with the ice machine at their facilities in Oklahoma City and Tulsa .

In March 1999, LSG Sky Chefs was warned by the FDA for six serious kitchen hygiene violations at its Dulles, Virginia facility .

In August 2008, LSG Sky Chefs was because of the unhygienic handling in the processing of seafood at their facility in East Granby ( Hartford County warned by the FDA).

In December 2009, LSG Sky Chefs was warned by the FDA for unsanitary conditions. The authorization of the LSG Sky Chefs in Denver powered device for preparing food for airlines was "approved" by (Engl. Approved ) to "temporarily" ( provisional ) downgraded. A review of the facility in September and October 2009 found dead and live cockroaches and other insects in many areas . The following were also observed and criticized: employees process food with their bare hands or with gloves that have not been disinfected, water dripping from the ceiling onto cutlery, puddles of water in the waste room, accumulation of dirt in refrigerators and dishwashers, and holes in the walls with insects and other vermin can settle. The failure to comply with hygiene regulations when handling washed cutlery, cleaning hoses and the storage of waste was also criticized. The pathogen Listeria monocytogenes , which causes listeriosis , was identified in three samples taken from the kitchen floor . LSG Sky Chefs was given a deadline of 30 days to correct the complained about. In a letter dated January 19, 2010, the FDA informed LSG Sky Chefs that the Denver facility had passed the renewed inspection and had regained full operating license with immediate effect. According to the results of the re-inspection, the company has taken all steps to address the deficiencies identified by the FDA in its original December 10, 2009 notification.
