Crystal Cabin Award
The Crystal Cabin Award is an international innovation award for outstanding products and concepts in the field of aircraft cabin equipment in Hamburg .
overview
The prize was brought into being by the Crystal Cabin Award eV It was first awarded on April 17, 2007. The award ceremony takes place annually as part of the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, but is independent of the trade fair. Companies, universities and even individuals can apply for the Crystal Cabin Award in seven different categories. The reference to civil aviation and the fulfillment of the criteria in one of the categories are decisive. The winners are determined by an independent international jury of experts. The competition entries are assessed on the basis of the degree of innovation, the potential market success and the usability.
Categories
The award is given in seven to eight categories:
Electronic systems
This category includes the fastest growing product group in the aviation industry and includes in-flight entertainment systems as well as connectivity and communication solutions that benefit the passenger directly.
Greener cab, health, safety and the environment
Applicants in this category must demonstrate a significant reduction in environmental pollution or a significant increase in well-being or safety standards for passengers, cargo or live cargo through their product or concept.
Cabin concepts
The new category awards holistic cabin concepts that are already in use or are about to be ready for the market. It is aimed at manufacturers as well as design companies and airlines.
Cabin systems
The cabin systems category combines all innovative products that provide the respective operator (e.g. the airline) with a significant advantage in terms of operation and efficiency. Examples are galleys, toilet systems, trolleys, air conditioning systems and seats, which are primarily defined by efficiency factors such as weight and use of space.
Passenger Comfort Hardware
This category (referred to as Comfort & Components until 2016 ) is intended to honor the increasing demands on passenger comfort . It is aimed at products that provide individual or group of passengers with a significant increase in comfort. Examples are seats, luggage compartments or first-class modules.
Materials & Components
This category distinguishes new materials and possible uses in the cabin, which reduce costs and increase user friendliness.
university
The university category gives students the chance to present their future-oriented products and ideas for the aircraft cabin to the professional and global public.
Visionary concepts
This category recognizes concepts for the aircraft cabin of the future. We are primarily looking for engineering and design studies that show how we could fly tomorrow.
Award ceremony
One winner will be chosen for each category. The winners receive a certificate and the "Crystal Cabin" trophy. The student applicants from a university or college who win a prize will also receive prize money to enable further research.

Expert jury
An international jury of experts, made up of scientists, engineers, representatives from aircraft manufacturers and airlines, and specialist journalists, evaluates the submitted applications. All decisions of the jury are made neutrally and without influencing interest groups. Each jury member awards points based on the specified criteria. The three participants whose entries achieve the most points in their category will advance to the final. This usually takes place one day before the start of the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg. The finalists present their products and concepts on site and answer questions from the jury members. The jury then awards points again and thus determines the winner of each category. The winners will be officially announced one day later at a gala dinner.
