Zodiac Aerospace or the Zodiac Group was a listed company based in Plaisir , near Paris. The group specialized in aviation products such as in-flight entertainment systems, kitchen systems and toilet modules. In Germany, Zodiac has locations in Hamburg and Herborn, among others. The group employed a total of around 35,000 people. Zodiac was acquired by Safran in 2017 .
history
The company was founded in 1896 by Maurice Mallet under the name Société Mallet, Mélandri et de Pitray as one of the first aviation companies worldwide and initially built airships . In 1909 Mallet changed the name to Société Française de Ballons Dirigeables et d'Aviation Zodiac out of an interest in expanding his company into all areas of aviation. With the beginning of the First World War, Zodiac began producing airships for military use, but the French government was not convinced of the success of airship bombing. For this reason, Zodiac founded a branch for aircraft construction in addition to hot air production . In 1916 the company was producing two aircraft a week.
The company expanded its involvement in the construction of ships and became a synonym for rigid inflatable boats , these were spun off into Zodiac Marine & Pool. Zodiac Marine & Pool belonged to Zodiac Aerospace until 2007, after which it was majority owned by the US Carlyle Group and was bought by the French Safran in May 2017 for just under seven billion euros .
Airplane seats
The company recently owned three aircraft seat plants: Sicma Aeroseat of France, Soliman in Tunisia and Weber Aircraft LLC in the USA.
Zodiac Marine
Zodiac developed the concept of the inflatable rubber boat back in 1930. After the Second World War, this concept became a great commercial success and the Zodiac brand was established in this area. However, the Marine & Pool division was sold to the financial investor Carlyle Group in 2007 .
