The Graz airport tunnel (officially underfloor route Feldkirchen - airport ) is a 3.247 km long railway tunnel in the planning stage including access routes in the south of Styria . As part of the Koralm Railway , the tunnel is intended to significantly shorten the travel time between Graz and Klagenfurt .

Starting position

Current footpath (on the right in the picture) from the Graz-Feldkirchen Airport stop to Graz Airport

The current double-track airport stop is approx. 300 m away from the actual airport, which is particularly difficult for passengers with luggage. Between the airport and the S-Bahn station, you also have to cross a state road at a roundabout.

Originally the ÖBB planned the construction of an underground route with a new airport train station in the course of the construction of the Koralm Railway . The current plans, however, provide for the construction of the underground route without a station.

Plant details

Coming from the north of Graz, the line is to branch off after the existing Feldkirchen-Seiersberg station and descend into a 3247 m long tunnel. The location of the Graz Airport train station is planned shortly after entering the tunnel .

This should have two 320 m long side platforms and two through tracks for freight trains. One of the two entrances, which are spanned by hall-like roof structures and also serve as smoke outlets and light inlets, will be built right next to the terminal entrance. Thanks to the three elliptical ceiling openings, which are covered on the surface by vaulted roofs , expensive fire protection equipment can be dispensed with, similar to the Graz Hauptbahnhof tram stop, which was roughly built around 2013 .

The walls of the station are made in exposed concrete look with the station name on the walls. The station will also be accessible barrier-free by means of escalators , fixed stairs and elevators .

After the train station, the tunnel approaches towards the A9 motorway . The railway line then runs parallel to the motorway .

Construction & commissioning

The start of construction was planned for 2019 [obsolete] . The station is to be built in a later construction phase and the tunnel will initially be single-track. Commissioning is expected in 2024 Template: future / in 4 years. The latest status in terms of airport connections did not include a stop for the Koralm Railway at the airport.
