The Sochi airport ( IATA code AER , ICAO code URSS , Russian Международный аэропорт Сочи ) is the airport of the Russian city of Sochi on the Black Sea in the Krasnodar region . It is located in the town of Adler , which has been part of the Sochi city administration since 1961.

There are flight connections with Turkish Airlines via Istanbul-Ataturk Airport and with several airlines via Moscow .
history
On November 23, 1945, it was decided to build a civil airport in Adler. During the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945), Soviet fighter planes took off from July 8th to September 1st, 1941 from what is now the airport area to defend the Black Sea coast.
In 1956 the airport building (today's old building) and the first runway were built. In the next year the airport handled 35,000 passengers and around 1000 tons of freight were transported. From 1960 to 1965 a new passenger baggage terminal and a hotel with 200 beds were built, as well as radio and navigation technology and approach lighting . The number of passengers at the airport rose from 902,000 in 1960 to 2.3 million in 1990. Afterwards, due to the collapse of the Soviet Union, the number of passengers continued to fall by 7.9% to 1.485 million passengers annually until 2009.
The airport was awarded the Order of the Red Labor Banner in 1966 . In the time of its existence, more than 60 million passengers have been handled at the airport.
Because of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , the airport was expanded to accommodate 4 million passengers. At the end of 2009, the first test flights were handled in the new terminal. In September 2010 it was put into operation according to IATA handling guidelines, and it was fully commissioned in 2012. With a total area of 57,000 m², it is one of the largest terminals in Russia. The new terminal has a capacity of 3500 passengers per hour.
An airport train station was created in the course of the expansion.
Ownership
Since July 2007, the airport has been part of the Russian conglomerate Basic Element , which is 100% owned by multi-billionaire Oleg Deripaska . The Cypriot Transport AMD-2 Limited holds all shares in the non-public joint-stock company Meschdunarodny Aeroport Sotschi ( Russian АО “Международный Аэропорт Сочи” ) operating the airport . The ООО Basel Aero ( Russian ООО "Базэл Аэро" ), which manages the airports of Basic Element, is in turn the sole agency of the operating company of the airport.
Incidents
- On October 1, 1972, an Ilyushin Il-18 of Aeroflot ( aircraft registration number CCCP-75507 ) crashed on the flight to Moscow-Vnukowo shortly after take-off in the Black Sea. All 100 passengers and 8 crew members were killed in the crash. The cause of the crash is assumed to be either a failure of the fuel system or the engine or a heart attack of the pilot (see also Aeroflot flight 1036 ) .
- On 3 May 2006, a crashed Airbus A320 of Armavia from Yerevan to the Black Sea; 113 people were killed (see also Armavia flight 967 ) .
- On December 25, 2016, a Russian military Tupolev Tu-154 (RA-85572) crashed into the Black Sea. The flight was planned from Sochi to Syria. 92 people were killed. According to the initial state, the cause of the accident was human error (see also Russian Federation Force Flight 7091 ) .
- On September 1, 2018, shot Boeing 737-8AS of UTair (VQ BVI) beyond the runway end while landing at the airport of Sochi. The left engine caught fire and the aircraft was destroyed. All inmates survived, with 18 injured. A ground worker was killed with a heart attack while the rescue was in progress .
