Armavia ( Armenian Արմավիա) was the largest Armenian airline based in Yerevan and based at Yerevan Airport .

history

The company was founded in 1996, but flight operations did not start until 2001. In 2002 Armavia entered into an alliance with Siberia Airlines (today: S7 Airlines ), which took over 70% of the shares in Armavia, while the remaining shares remained with Armenian investors. In October 2002 the company took delivery of its first Airbus A320 .

A second Airbus followed in August 2003, and Armavia took over routes from the state-owned company Armenian Airlines , which filed for bankruptcy. Armavia then acquired a monopoly from the Armenian government on certain lucrative routes (e.g. Yerevan – Moscow). In return, Armavia pledged to employ local workers, not to reduce the number of flights offered, and to pay the state an annual fee of one million US dollars. On January 1, 2005, Armavia took over further routes from Armenian International Airways , making Armavia the largest air carrier in Armenia.

In 2005 the Russian multimillionaire of Armenian descent Mikhail Baghdasarow (actually Baghdasarjan , Armenian Բաղդասարյան) acquired the 70% of the shares in Siberia Airlines. Baghdasarov is said to have good contacts with the powerful Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan . The criticism of the World Bank on the monopoly Armavias which indicates that prices were inflated, was rejected by the authorities with the argument that Armavia is for national security is important because in the event of a resumption of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh Armavia unlike foreign Providers would not stop the flights.

In 2011 Armavia was the world's first customer of the Sukhoi SSJ 100-95 , but in July 2012 it was announced that the second Superjet on order would not be accepted.

At the end of March 2013 Armavia ceased all flight operations.

Destinations

Armavia recently offered international flights, the destinations within the German-speaking area varied depending on the season ( Cologne / Bonn , Frankfurt , Berlin-Tegel , Düsseldorf , Vienna , Amsterdam ).
