Armenian Airlines was the national airline of Armenia from 1991 to 2004 .

history

Armenian Airlines was founded shortly after independence in 1991 and held a monopoly until 2002 when private competitors Armenian International Airways and Armavia entered the scene. The main base was the Yerevan (Zvartnots) international airport . Until 1997, Armenian Airlines was profitable. The director Arsen Avetisjan blamed the economic crisis in Russia at the time for the losses in 1998 . When Armavia (then part of Siberia Airlines ) signed a contract with the Armenian government that secured Armavia lucrative routes such as Moscow - Yerevan , Armenian Airlines began its inexorable decline. In 2004 the company had to file for bankruptcy.
