On December 25, 2016, a Tu-154B-2 crashed on Russian Federation Force flight 7091 ( flight number : RFF7091), a special flight by the Russian armed forces on behalf of the Russian Defense Ministry from Sochi Airport in southern Russia to Syria . The plane, in which there were 84 passengers and eight crew members, crashed into the Black Sea after taking off . There were no survivors.

Plane and crew

The Tu-154B-2 ( registration number : RA-85572, previously CCCP-85572, c / n : 83A572, s / n : 0572) was delivered in 1983 in the colors of Aeroflot to the Air Force of the Soviet Union . In 1991 the machine became the property of Russia . At the time of the accident, she had completed 6,689 flight hours.

The captain in charge on board was Roman Volkov with 4,000 hours of flight experience. The seven other crew members included the navigation officer Yuri Petuchow.

the accident

The Tupolev Tu-154 was originally supposed to fly from the Chkalovsky military airfield near Moscow with a stopover in North Ossetian Mosdok to the Hmeimim military airfield in Latakia . Due to bad weather in Mozdok, the aircraft was an unscheduled refueling on in Eagle situated Sochi airport diverted. The start in Moscow was already many hours late.

According to the authorities, the accident occurred in the morning at 5:27 a.m. local time (3:27 a.m. CET), a few minutes after take-off from Sochi Airport. The machine failed to gain height and made a right turn, then disappeared from the radar. According to the information, the crew did not send an emergency signal.

Parts of the wreck were discovered at a distance of 1.5 km from the coast. At the time of the accident, the weather was good. Eleven bodies had been recovered by the evening of December 25th. One black box was found on December 27, 2016 and the other on December 28, 2016. Both were brought to Moscow for evaluation.

The evaluation of the voice recorder and parts of the salvaged debris indicated on the one hand human error as the cause of the accident. Accordingly, instead of the landing gear, the landing flaps could have been retracted, which would have led to a loss of lift and thus to a crash. A second possibility would be a fault in the flap mechanism with similar effects. The ministry did not comment on this information, but said it was investigating the leak through which the media learned of the voice recording. In addition, there was no explosion, but a form of sabotage cannot be ruled out. However, no traces of an explosion were found on board.

The Russian investigation concluded that the aircraft had made a controlled flight onto the surface of the water. She therefore concentrated on understanding this strange behavior of the pilots or with health aspects, e.g. B. to explain fatigue and loss of spatial awareness. The aircraft had been brought into a landing configuration by the pilots.

According to research by Novaya Gazeta , it is likely that the prescribed crew was not sitting in the cockpit, but that a pilot's seat was occupied by another pilot. As a special feature, it was mentioned in this context that the original voice recording was not published.

Victim

There were 92 people on board, including 8 crew members and 64 members of the Alexandrow Ensemble (all choir members except 3), which was supposed to give a New Year's concert at the Russian Air Force Base Hmeimim.

The passenger list included the head of the Alexandrov Ensemble , Lieutenant General Valery Chalilov , two high-ranking officials, the Russian doctor Yelisaveta Glinka , who is known for her charitable work , and head of the aid organization Just Aid , which was supposed to deliver medicines to the Latakia University Clinic , a total of nine journalists the Russian television station first channel , NTV and military TV channel Zvezda and the four young ballerinas Ralina Gilmanowa, Liliya Pyrjewa, Marija Klokotowa and Darya Trofimova.
